What’s the issue?
The benefit is meant to cover similar things to DLA and supports a disabled person with the extra cost of having a disability.
What we have been doing about it
In September, we responded to the first independent review of PIP. We spoke to our campaigns network and our Information and Advice Guidance team who have been supporting people through the process to find out what the issues were. We heard about the continuing delays and that people are not being supported enough throughout the process.
In our response we recommended that the Government
- increase signposting to organisations that can support claimants
- identify which claimants would be suitable for a paper based assessment
- increase the speed of communication with claimants.
In 2011 we did a national survey to find out how disabled people could be affected by the change from DLA to PIP. Over 2,200 people responded, and we published a report showing that 86% of disabled people would have to cut back on everyday essentials, like food or transport, if their payments were reduced or stopped. We used the survey results to respond to several Government consultations on DLA and PIP, and the survey has been widely quoted in debates about making PIP work better for disabled people.
