Hi Will, congratulations again on the fantastic achievement of being selected as represent Paralympics GB’s boccia team. How was it?
“It was really good! I arrived the week before the competition started, which helped me to acclimatise to the temperature and time difference. When I first got there, I kept waking up at 2am – but eventually I was able to settle into my surroundings at the athlete’s village.
I was also able to train at the venue, which helped me get used to the court surface and prepare for the competition
.
Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we had to stay in the athlete’s village so couldn’t really take in the sights of Tokyo.
How did you feel taking on the competition?
My first game was against the world champion which was an exciting challenge – and my first ball of the whole competition was perfect, which gave me a boost!
Overall, I wanted to go to Tokyo and give it my best shot, which I did, so from that point of view I achieved what I wanted.
Were you able to keep in touch with your family throughout the competition?
My sister was able to come with me and act as my assistant throughout the games. We kept the rest of the family up to date via WhatsApp, and of course they watched from home.
They also sent my brother, who I live with, Team GB bunting and gear to support him in cheering me on!
What happened when you came home?
I attended Channel 4’s Paralympics GB Athletes’ Homecoming show! It was a great event, all the athletes met up at the Hilton hotel beforehand where the Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave a speech and congratulated everyone on our achievements.
Then we went to Wembley Arena and lined up backstage and had the chance to enter the arena in front of a full crowd! Made me realise just how much support there is for the Paralympics! Adam Hills and Josh Widdicombe interviewed some of the Paralympians, which was great to watch.
What comes next?
Next is the European championships in Seville, which is taking place in November. The selections are soon and I am hoping to be on the team. I’ve had a small break from boccia but continued with my gym schedule, as well as working with coaches on a plan for the European championships!
