To mark Volunteers’ Week 2021, we caught up with with Sue and Jim, just two of our amazing volunteers who support the work of teams across Papworth Trust, about the important work they do and what volunteering means to them.

Sue

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into volunteering with Papworth Trust?
Previously I spent a lot of time travelling due to my husband’s job and eventually settled in Little Paxton. I have also worked at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and have been retired for the past 7 years.

How do you volunteer with Papworth Trust?
I volunteer with the HR team and have a wide range of duties, including dealing with recruitment, training, supporting new staff and ensure they settle in.

How have your working practices adapted during the pandemic?
During the pandemic I’ve been working from home after adapting a spare room into an office – and carried on with it!

What do you like most about volunteering?
I love every minute of it!  I don’t like to sit about doing nothing so I thrive when being kept busy.  I work with the most brilliant team and now wouldn’t volunteer anywhere else!

What advice would you give to someone considering volunteering?
Do it! It’s good for the soul so just go for it!

Jim

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into volunteering with Papworth Trust?
My name is Jim.  I have previously worked in the Armed Forces and in lorry driving, I then decided I wanted to spent more time with family so took on a role as a relief driver and then a few other roles, including as a Global Distribution Manager, but then I had to stop due to injuries.  After years of being a Papworth Trust tenant, I received a letter about volunteering.

How do you volunteer with Papworth Trust?
After being a tenant for 19 years, I first volunteered as tenant representative in 2012 and was later elected as chair of tenant panel, which I did for 7 years.
I also volunteered in what was called the Policy & Involvement team, providing support in the office.  Following that I joined HR team as Volunteer Coordinator, supporting where necessary including with My Learning Cloud throughout pandemic.

What do you like most about volunteering?
I enjoy the variety of tasks and that no two days the same, and no two people the same.  I enjoy the work, as well as keeping myself busy and active.

What advice would you give to someone considering volunteering?
Do it!  Don’t just think about it, you’ll get more out of it than you’re giving!
