International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Celebrating Leadership for an Inclusive Future
On Tuesday 3 December 2024, we celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, focusing this year on "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future." On this day, Papworth Trust will be highlighting the inspiring leadership of the tenants and customers we work with and who share a passion for creating a more inclusive society.
Tenant Scrutiny Panel
One key group driving this effort is our Tenant Scrutiny Panel, an independent team of tenants who collaborate with the Trust to review our housing and maintenance services. Panel member Jenny explained, “I believe tenant representation is key for enjoying a mutually rewarding relationship with the Trust and putting systems in place designed to meet the needs of tenants.”
Tenant and Panel member Colin shared how accessibility improvements in his home have transformed his lift: “having a home with the lift has really enabled me to be more independent at home, as I can go to see my family all over the house on the 1st floor and ground floor. Previously I lived in a private rented house which did not have the adaptions I needed. I was stuck on the ground floor and I could not take part in family things. I remember when I was thinking and reading about being on the Tenant Scrutiny Panel: “Remember, every voice matters and your active involvement can contribute to positive changes in housing services.” So, this is why I volunteer. Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success.”
Experts by Experience in Day Opportunities
At the Trust’s Day Opportunities centres, customers like Katie and Dan also play important roles. Katie facilitates meetings with fellow customers at the Abington Day Opportunities centre, gathering feedback to improve the service. Dan, the "Expert by Experience" lead in Huntingdon, ensures customers feel comfortable voicing suggestions and concerns.
Katie said, "I enjoy talking to others and feeding their ideas back to improve the service." Dan added, “I love making others happy, and that makes me happy.”
Dan says "All of the customers know if they have any suggestions or concerns, they can come to me to voice them. That’s what the role is – it's about customers feeling comfortable to speak about the service and how we can keep making it better. ”
Chris, an "Expert by Experience" at Abington, has been instrumental in organising activities like football goals and contributing to the Christmas performance at the centre. He plans to become a Volunteer in the New Year to continue helping others.
Frank, who has been in his "Expert by Experience" role for almost a year, helps customers explore new activities and make transitions between sessions. “I want to help others experience what’s out there and not be afraid,” Frank said.
An inclusive future for all
On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we celebrate individuals like Jenny, Colin, Katie, Dan, Chris, and Frank, whose leadership is shaping a more inclusive future for all.
