Papworth Trust urges employers to make recruitment truly accessible

Papworth Trust welcomes a Select Committee report published today into Disability at Work: Employment support for disabled people.

The inquiry which began its work in July 2025 has made several recommendations including the turnaround times for reasonable adjustments, ensuring recruitment practices are accessible, rolling out disability inclusion training for line managers and running disability awareness raising media campaigns.

Nicola Whiteman, Policy and Communications Manager, who gave oral evidence to the Select Committee said:
“Despite much progress over the years, misconceptions about employing disabled people still persist. Employers remain anxious about employing disabled people and many recruitment processes continue to be inaccessible and need improving.”

“Disability awareness is increasing, but this isn't always filtering down to recruiting managers. We do see some good practices of flexible recruitment processes including publishing interview questions ahead of time or allowing videos to be submitted rather than a CV; but they’re the exception rather than the default position. These simple measures have such a positive impact and support a candidate to showcase the best version of themselves.”
