After suffering a stroke 10 years ago, JJ admitted he needed support and guidance. That came in the shape of Realise Futures, one of the Community Connections Essex partners.

How did you feel about your situation prior to starting on Community Connections?

“I had a stroke 10 years ago and have been rehabilitating since. I was very sensitive after my haemorrhage and the last two years I have been working on improving myself.
Realise Futures has really helped me to believe in myself. I would have never known where to start - I lost all my skills and needed some guidance.”

How did you find out about Community Connections and what made you give it a try?

"I went to my local council because I wanted to move house. I asked them to find someone to help me back into training and to become self-reliant again. I was recommended to Realise Futures from the council."

How would you describe the difference the programme has made?

"I have made a great comeback. I was so frustrated before. Realise Futures have been a saving grace and helping hand that I am so thankful for. Without them, I would be at the end of my tether.
I have realised that there needs to be more organisations and help for people with disabilities. Realise Futures are worth their weight in gold."

What are your circumstances now?

"I have enrolled on an ACL Employability Skills course called “This Is Your Year.” I have also enrolled on Spanish, Creative Writing, ICT and Mental Wellbeing courses.
I have started volunteering as a ‘Lived Experience Volunteer’ for the Stroke Association. This involves supporting stroke survivors with weekly phone calls.
I now have an up-to-date CV and I have applied to represent my political party in the local elections."

How do you feel about your life now?

“I am 100% more confident from the way the programme has supported and guided me. They have helped me immensely and their enthusiasm has been a breath of fresh air.
I am now learning Spanish and improving my creative writing and I am enjoying my Employability Skills course.
I love the work I’m doing with the Stroke Association because I can talk about my experiences and injuries to help others.
I am going in the right direction and have been guided to where I want to be. I still have a way to go but I won’t stop fighting to get where I want to be.”
