A single mother with four children, Kate talks about how Community Connections has supported her return to work...
I was made redundant from my last job six months ago. It made me feel very low and anxious - particularly as it happened at the same time as the Covid-19 pandemic.

I was very keen to return to work as I don't like being home on my own and feel very isolated. I needed help with my CV and help with returning to work.

I was referred to Jo, and Employment Advisor, and we were able to speak on the phone and have outside meetings.

I told her I wanted to return to work and I enjoyed being part of a team. I also enjoy the social side of work as being on my own makes me feel anxious.

We started looking at part-time vacancies in supermarket retail and JO created a really good CV with me.

Following a lot of job-searching, I refused to give up. I kept going with my applications and found a part-time job at a local supermarket. My hours have since increased and it is good to be earning money and meeting new people.

How has Community Connections helped you?

It has made me feel more confident and capable. Some of the help - for instance with getting vouchers to top up my gas and electricity meters - has been an absolute lifeline.

It has been very good to be able to contact Jo when I needed her help. I have felt very encouraged and supported.

It is a very flexible and responsive service and I do appreciate all the help Jo has given me. I now feel very positive about my future.

This experience has really improved my confidence and self-esteem.
