We all encounter hardships and barriers at one time or another, but for people with disabilities, barriers can be more frequent and have greater impact.
The World Health Organisation acknowledges that transportation is one of the seven most important common barriers that make it difficult or impossible for a person with disabilities to function.
A key element to the support we offer within our Day Service is to help engage customers with their local communities, as part of our Independent living skills programme.
For example, we access sessions at their local gym, go swimming, visit the cinema, visit places of interest, and take part in shopping sessions in local supermarkets.
We know that this makes a real difference to improving customer’s independence, socialisation, community cohesion, confidence, self-esteem and overall wellbeing.
A fully accessible minibus will enable us to reduce the impact that our travel restraints are having on some of our customers and maximise the opportunities that they can choose to take part in.
The minibus will help to improve and maintain independence, socialisation and community cohesion for all of our customers.
